Programs & Priorities for Hawkesbury Region PDF Print E-mail

Communities That Care program (CTC) is run by caring citizens of our region who work together to promote the healthy development of our youth. CTC aims at reducing the following five behaviours:

  • delinquency;
  • violence;
  • alcohol and drug use;
  • teenage pregnancy;
  • school drop-out.

The CTC system recognizes that a community-wide approach broadens the community’s ability to create positive changes. The region of Hawkesbury has formed community partnerships made up of parents, volunteers, youth and local agencies, who work together for our youth.

Together, we created a community profile by gathering local statistics and compiling the results of a CTC youth survey which was given to students in grades 6, 8, 10 and 12 in our area. The extensive study gave us a clear indication of the risks that impact the lives of our young citizens.

The results of our study indicated that the top three Risk Factors in our area are:

ü attitudes favouring drug and alcohol use;

ü attittudes favouring antisocial behaviour;

ü parental attitudes favouring drug and alcohol use.

To follow up on these results, and after the extensive study of the existing resources in our community, the CTC Community Board chose a tested and effective prevention program called Lions Quest – Skills for Adolescence.

Lions Quest – Skills for Adolescence is a comprehensive youth development program that teaches life skills within a safe and caring environment. It teaches young people how to make good choices, how to be of service to others and how to make significant contributions in their communities. All these skills encourage our youth to lead healthy and productive lives.

Lions Quest – Skills for Adolescence is a school-based program that is implemented in grade 7 in the following local schools:

  • Pleasant Corners Public School;
  • St. Jude Catholic School;
  • École secondaire publique Le Sommet;
  • École secondaire catholique régionale de Hawkesbury.
